- Tamworth Borough Council has launched a formal Community Governance Review, asking should Tamworth have a parish council?
- Everyone is invited to have their views through an online survey and at a series of local engagement events.
- Survey closes 9 August
Tamworth Borough Council has launched a formal Community Governance Review (CGR) to gather views from residents, businesses, community organisations and other stakeholders on the future of local governance in the borough.
The review will consider whether creating a parish council for the whole of Tamworth would help strengthen local representation and community involvement, especially in the light of local government reorganisation where government’s plans mean that Tamworth Borough Council will be replaced by a larger unitary authority, or authorities, covering a wider area than the Tamworth borough alone.
A parish council is a local, community-led tier of government that sits below the principal council. Parish councils typically focus on local matters such as parks, allotments, community facilities and local events. They are funded through a parish precept, which is an additional charge on council tax.
The consultation opens today (Monday 29 June) and closes on Sunday 9 August 2026.
Residents can take part by completing an online survey and by attending one of the consultation events taking place across the borough.
- Tamworth Market – Tuesday 30 June
- Kaleidoscope of Dreams Festival, Castle Grounds – Saturday 4 July
- Stonydelph Community Estate Day, St Martin's Church – Wednesday 8 July
- Ankerside pop-up event – Saturday 18 July
- Aethelstan 1100, Tamworth Market – Saturday 25 July
- Pride in Place Fun Day, Heart of Tamworth – Saturday 8 August
The consultation is a key stage of the review and will play an important role in shaping the final outcome. Feedback received will inform recommendations on whether a parish council should be established for Tamworth, which will then be considered through the council's formal decision-making process.
The review is being overseen by a cross-party Community Governance Review working group, which has been established to consider the evidence gathered throughout the process and make recommendations on the future governance arrangements for Tamworth.
On behalf of the cross-party councillor working group, Carol Dean, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “This review is about listening to the people of Tamworth and understanding what they want for the future of local governance in our town.
"A parish council could provide an additional layer of local representation and community leadership, but it is important that residents understand both the opportunities and the implications before sharing their views.
"I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to find out more and complete the survey so that we can make sure the decision around whether to create a parish for Tamworth or not, reflects the views of our communities.”
If anyone has any questions about the Community Governance Review, they can email CGRenquiries@tamworth.gov.uk.
The Community Governance Review is an opportunity for local people to have their say on an important issue affecting the future governance of Tamworth. The council is encouraging residents, businesses and community organisations to learn more about the proposals, take part in the consultation and help shape the next stage of the review.
