Before you can drive a licensed Hackney carriage or private hire vehicle, you must obtain a driver's licence. If you do not have this licence and you drive one of these vehicles you will be committing an offence.
To be eligible to apply for a Hackney carriage or private hire drivers licence, you must be over 21 and have held a full UK DVLA driving licence (or the European equivalent) for a minimum of one year. Please refer to our guidance notes for applicants.

New applications - first steps
Please email your application to taxi-licensing@tamworth.gov.uk
The following information must be provided:
- Application form and fee. Payment can be made either by credit/debit card.
- DVLA check code
- Photo
- Right to Work evidence
- Tax check code
- Disclosure & Barring Service
You will then be contacted and asked to produce your identification.
Following submission of a completed application, you will be required to:
- Attend a medical appointment at Aldergate Medical Practice, Salters Lane, Tamworth.
- Attend a knowledge test
- Pass a driving standards assessment
- Pass CSE & DDA training
What happens next?
When all the documents have been processed and cleared, you will be advised by the licensing officer when your licence/badge will be available for collection.
