  • Tamworth Borough Council is asking residents, businesses and community groups to help shape the town’s future through its new local plan
  • The plan will guide how Tamworth grows and develops up to 2043, covering housing, jobs, green space, the town centre and more
  • Have your say at tamworth.govocal.com, your views will help inform the plan

Tamworth Borough Council is inviting people who live, work and spend time in the borough to get involved in shaping its new local plan, the blueprint that will guide development and growth in Tamworth until 2043.

The local plan sets out where new homes, employment land, community facilities and infrastructure will go. It also sets the policies to protect and enhance the natural environment, manage flood risk, support a vibrant town centre, and help makes sure Tamworth remains a great place to live for generations to come.

A new online engagement platform is now live at tamworth.govocal.com where residents, and stakeholders can read about the key issues facing the borough and share their views. The council wants to hear from as many people as possible across a range of topics, including:

  • Housing, where new homes should go, what types of homes are needed, and how to make homes more affordable for first-time buyers and families
  • Employment and the economy, supporting existing businesses and attracting new investment and job opportunities to the borough
  • The town centre, how Tamworth’s town centre can be revitalised and made a thriving destination for shopping, leisure and culture
  • The natural environment, protecting green spaces, nature reserves and the borough’s extensive network of rivers and open land
  • Climate change and flood risk, how new development can be designed to reduce flood risk and help Tamworth adapt to a changing climate
  • Transport and connectivity, improving walking, cycling and public transport so residents can get around more sustainably
  • Historic environment, preserving Tamworth’s rich heritage, from the castle to its seven conservation areas and many listed buildings
  • Design and place-making, ensuring new development is well designed and contributes to the character of our neighbourhoods

Councillor Ben Clarke portfolio holder for housing, homelessness and planning, said: “Tamworth is a town with a proud history and a real ambition for its future. The local plan is one of the most important things we’ll produce as a council, it will shape where people live, where businesses grow, and what our town looks and feels like for the next twenty years.

“But we can’t get this right without hearing from the people who know Tamworth best. Whether you’re a resident, a business owner, a young person looking to put down roots, or someone who simply cares about the kind of place this borough is going to be, your views matter and we want to hear them.

“This is your chance to have a real say. I’d encourage everyone to take a few minutes to visit the platform, look at the issues we’re grappling with, and tell us what you think. We’re listening.”

Tamworth is one of the most compact urban local authorities in England, with limited land and growing housing need. The council has already been gathering evidence to understand the borough’s needs, including a town centre retail study, a housing and economic development needs assessment, and a Green Belt review, and now wants to hear directly from the people of Tamworth.

There’s no need to comment on everything, simply focus on the issues that matter most to you. Every response will be read and will help inform the draft Local Plan, which will be published for further public consultation at a later stage.

Notes:

Tamworth Borough Council is currently developing a new local plan for the period 2022–2043, which will replace the current adopted Local Plan (2006–2031). The council is in the evidence gathering and early consultation stage. More information and the evidence base documents are available at www.tamworth.gov.uk/local-plans/local-plan-2022-2043.

The Local Plan 2022–2043 will be prepared in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework and will go through a formal examination in public before adoption. The council’s Local Development Scheme 2026–2029 sets out the timetable for the plan’s preparation.
