Tamworth Borough Council have announced that a dedicated public servant has been recognised for their years of service to the people of Tamworth with an honorary title.

The title of honorary alderwoman has been awarded to former councillor Michelle Cook at the Full Council meeting on Monday 20 November, following a unanimous vote by councillors.

The title of honorary alderman/alderwoman is conferred upon former borough councillors who have served the authority for a minimum of three consecutive terms. On average 12 years continual service.

Michelle Cook was first elected to Tamworth Borough Council in 2011 and served three consecutive terms. She was a Member of Cabinet and held the Portfolio for Housing during her time on the council.

Nominating Michelle, Councillor Rob Pritchard, said: “Most councils have their way of thanking those who have served the authority for a long period and Tamworth is no different.

“It’s a special moment when we get to move a motion for an Alderman or Alderwoman, as it’s not something that happens very often.

“To serve three consecutive terms is a significant investment of your life to provide service to the public and I think it’s important this council chose to recognise that in our constitution.

“I believe that regardless of your party or affiliations the council should say thank you to those who invest this time in serving his council.

“Over her time on the council Michelle has served the authority in a range of roles, and anyone who knows Michelle, will know she always tries her hardest and most importantly has served the authority for three consecutive terms.

“Michelle joins a cohort of former council members who served the council for over 10 years. The council is truly grateful for those members of the community who choose to serve the authority in elected office for a significant number of years, as Michelle has done.”
